The perfect solution
Computer-based teaching revolutionizes freshman chemistry labs

By Phil Williams
phil@franklin.uga.edu

Each week, nearly 2,000 UGA students come into freshman chemistry labs, where they work with retorts and beakers as they learned in high school. But a new twist has been added to labs here--computer-based probes that allow students to perform bench science as researchers do.

The change has been dramatic and has improved instructional capabilities remarkably, according to Charles Atwood, coordinator of freshman chemistry.
"This brings us finally into the 21st century," he says. "It allows students to perform experiments quickly and accurately, and so far the results have been amazing."

A problem with freshman chemistry labs has always been the intense level of activity required of teaching assistants and professors. TAs particularly had to roam the lab constantly, answering questions, solving problems and giving advice. Now, a single TA at an integrated computer station can monitor the work of 25 students in experiments that test everything from temperature and spectral properties of liquids to the analysis of gases with a spectrometer.

The system, built by a Cincinnati company called MeasureNet, involves a series of small two-person computer workstations where students work on experiments, using specific probes for assigned experiments. The result has been an increase in learning speed and knowledge of equipment that is similar to that used in labs where many science graduates may one day work.

"The system is extremely user-friendly, and most of it is menu-driven," says Bobby Stanton, general chemistry lab coordinator. "Each system controller is like the brain of the system, and they are really easy to upgrade."

Students have reported that learning to use the probes is quite easy, and in short order they are doing everything from determining what ions are in liquid to the elemental content of some substance.

Installation of the new lab system began a little over a year ago, and it has only recently been completed as new controllers were added when funds became available.
The upgrades in freshman chemistry labs aren't the only steps forward in the chemistry building. Richard Morrison has overseen an upgrading of the organic chemistry laboratory that now allows students to use cutting-edge diagnostic tools such as infrared spectrometry, gas chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.
"Two years ago, this was a storage room," says Morrison, as he looks over the high-tech lab. He laughs when he says "this new equipment probably improves us by a century," but he's not really kidding.

The new equipment allows smaller groups to perform far more intensive analyses of substances than ever before in UGA history. The spectrometers and magnetic resonance equipment have been up and running for a while, but the gas chromatographs have just come online.
Few teaching labs in the country are so well-equipped, says Morrison. Instead of rudimentary tests, undergraduates can now unravel the actual structure of compounds--something limited in years past to graduate students and faculty. Morrison hopes soon to connect the new equipment in the organic chemistry lab to the MeasureNet system, too, making it easier for students to perform experiments and then save the data on computers.
One of the advantages of the system in the freshman chemistry labs is that, quite soon, all the information from student experiments will be saved to a network server in the chemistry building, from which it can be remotely accessed.

"So students could do an experiment here and then go back to their dorm rooms or houses and continue to work on it," says Atwood. Labs will not end when a student leaves the bench but go on as he or she has time later in the day or week.

While other U.S. universities are now using computer-storage capabilities for students' bench-science labs, most still require one computer for each workstation, which takes up a tremendous amount of work space. With a single computer hooked to much smaller workstations, which are mounted at eye level off the benches, there?s plenty of space for experiments at UGA. In fact, in terms of numbers of students, UGA is the largest user of this system in the country.

All students need to do with the MeasureNet system is plug in the preprogrammed probe for whatever experiment is being run on a specific day.

"We were lagging behind, but now we?re on the cutting edge," says Stanton. "The students and TAs have been impressed with what we can accomplish."
Mark HoffmanTue, 30 Aug 2011 16:25:00 GMTf1397696-738c-4295-afcd-943feb885714:86229http://www.measurenet-tech.com/the-company/news/news-articles/bid/86037/Jensen-Caricatures-Draw-On-History#Comments0Jensen Caricatures Draw On Historyhttp://www.measurenet-tech.com/the-company/news/news-articles/bid/86037/Jensen-Caricatures-Draw-On-History

MeasureNet is pleased to announce that its website and newsletters will feature caricatures of notable chemists drawn by Professor William Jensen of the University of Cincinnati. The University is the sixth institution of higher learning in the state to employ MeasureNet in their science teaching laboratories.

Founded in 1809 and named after the Miami Indian Nation historically inhabiting the region, the public university is home to over 14,200 undergraduates. College rankings published in 2008 by U.S. News & World Report listed Miami University 27th among the top public universities in the nation, recognizing Miami for providing "outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success." Kaplan Publishing's 2005 edition of The Unofficial, Biased Guide to the 331 Most Interesting Colleges recognizes Miami as one of the country's top schools. The rankings are based on a survey of guidance counselors at public and private high schools. Miami was named one of 30 schools in the United States that offers "an education comparable to that at Ivy League universities at a fraction of the price" in the book The Public Ivies: America's Flagship Universities.

According to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry's Professor Neil Danielson, some 150 students per year will utilize the Department's two 12-station MeasureNet Networks. "First year Bachelor of Science chemistry majors laboratory (Sections CHM 153, CHM 161) will initially use the MeasureNet system for titrations and molecular spectroscopy. Some of the same experiments in the third year analytical chemistry laboratory (CHM 364) for BA chemistry majors will also be adapted for MeasureNet"

Danielson said that MeasureNet will play an active role in reforming experiments and supporting undergraduate projects. "The MeasureNet system will update titration experiments that still demonstrate important chemistry such as acid-base, precipitation, and metal complexation. In addition, it will provide individual experimentation in molecular spectroscopy. We expect some of the final 'research' projects in CHM 364 will also benefit from MeasureNet equipment use. Currently CHM 455, the advanced instrumental analysis laboratory for BS chemistry majors, has a research component in which I expect MeasureNet could be involved."

"It is a pleasure and an honor to welcome Miami of Ohio into our user community." said MeasureNet Director of Marketing Michael Kurutz. "Miami has received many accolades for academic excellence in recent years and MeasureNet will play a key role in supporting the continued quality of the Chemistry laboratory program for many years to come."

Miami joins Ohio MeasureNet users Xavier University, Lourdes College, Bowling Green State University-Firelands, Mt. Vernon Nazarene College, and the University of Cincinnati.

MeasureNet Technology Ltd. manufactures patented, network-based data acquisition interfaces for science teaching laboratories. The networks are being installed, along with new and adapted curriculum, into two newly-renovated laboratories.

According to Chemistry Professor Madhumati Mahalingam, the switch to MeasureNet from a previous interface system was driven by a number of concerns. "When we implemented CBL interfaces, we had 12 lab sections with 30 students each. Soon the enrollment increased to 18 labs with 30 students. As a result of the increased usage, we ran into problems pretty soon with link errors between the interface and the calculator because of link cables being worn out or the link connectors on the calculators being worn out. That became quite frustrating. ...We did try to provide our own calculators but couldn't sustain the numbers we were losing each semester."

In addition to hand-held devices, Mahalingam added that PC-based interfaces were seen as a less than optimal solution for the department's General Chemistry laboratories. "All of these problems prompted me to look for a system that was robust and able to take the wear and tear of the large numbers of students, as well as provide the flexibility of using modern technology and the internet to simplify and reduce the time for data acquisition. We looked to upgrade to computers with the Vernier™ probes but due to the power requirement of installing that many computers in the lab, as well as the added hazard of a corrosive environment for the computers, it did not seem like an ideal choice. In fact, when the two options were presented to the IT department here, they recommended going with MeasureNet. MeasureNet stations are built for the Chemistry lab environment unlike computers. Former Department Chair Professor Scott Northrup and his colleague Professor Thomas Furtsch will spearhead MeasureNet's integration into the first-year curriculum. MeasureNet networks are replacing calculator-based interfaces used by students over the past decade.

First opening its doors as Dixie College in 1912, Tennessee Polytechnic Institute began its early life with just 13 faculty members and 19 students in 1916. The original campus began as a daisy field of 18 undeveloped acres, an administrative building, and two dormitories. The town of Cookeville served as a whistle stop for locomotives on the Tennessee Central Railroad between Nashville and Knoxville in those early days and its said that faculty would greet students at the train depot to escort them to the school. Today, the university has grown to 87 buildings on a 235-acre campus with 370 faculty and nearly 8,000 students (2006).

U.S. News & World Report ranked Tennessee Tech University as one of the top eleven public universities in the South in its 2007 America's Best Colleges guide. Placed in the top ranking for five years, the University remains the only Tennessee school to be ranked as a Top Public University in the South according to the guide. Tennessee Tech also was rated by The Princeton Review as a "Best Southeastern College" in 2006 for the third time. It was one of four public institutions in the state to garner the rating. Top quality academics, low cost and exceptional financial aid service earned TTU a spot in the 2007 America's Best Value Colleges guidebook published by the Princeton Review and Random House.

"Tennessee Tech is a greatly admired institution with a growing reputation and we're please to have them as partners," says MeasureNet President Robert Voorhees. "We congratulate Scott Northrup and his colleagues on their decision and admire their foresight and tenacity. We'd also like to thank Chair Professor Jeffery Boles for his assistance and support."

MeasureNet installations now stretch across from east to west in the Volunteer State and include other institutions such as Tennessee State, University of Tennessee Knoxville, and the University of Memphis.

MeasureNet Technology Ltd. manufactures patented, network-based data acquisition interfaces for science teaching laboratories. The two institutions join Pontifical Catholic University in featuring MeasureNet in their chemistry teaching laboratories—making all major 4-year college programs in Puerto Rico's southern cultural and economic center MeasureNet users.

Known as "Ciudad de los Leones," Ponce was founded by the grandson of Spanish explorer Ponce de León in 1692 and is presently Puerto Rico's third largest metropolitan area numbering 264,000. Elegant neoclassical Spanish architecture graces the central plaza and surrounding residential neighborhoods. Pastel-washed buildings fan out along turquoise-hued marble sidewalks housing everything from dance studios to cafes. Ponce boasts what is arguably the finest art museum in the Caribbean, as well as the famous red and black "Parque de Bombas:" a fire station turned museum commemorating the efforts of firemen in 1883 who saved the town and much of the island's south coast from a raging fire.

Puerto Rico itself is a major commercial center in the Caribbean and has considerable pharmaceutical-related infrastructure that employs many in the sciences. The island's American Chemical Society student affiliates are regarded as some of the most active in all of the United States.

Inter American University of Ponce was founded in 1910 and is located on the south-eastern quadrant of the city. It's 30 acre campus is home to over 5,100 students and is part of the larger nine-campus Inter American University system founded in San German in 1912. The Ponce campus offers degree programs in Biomedical Sciences, Radiological Science, and Optical Science Technologies.

The University of Puerto Rico-Ponce is just south of the city center near the Ponce Playa interchange of the island's main toll road. It hosts some 3,400 students offering a variety of degree programs including ones in Health Care and Life Sciences. UPR-Ponce is the first branch of Puerto Rico's public university system to employ MeasureNet in its teaching laboratories.

"We are very pleased by the adoption of UPR-Ponce as the first of the UPR campuses to use MeasureNet. I am very grateful for the patient efforts of its Chemistry department and allied administrative personnel who made MeasureNet a top priority," says MeasureNet President Robert Voorhees. "Inter American-Ponce is also a significant and prestigious addition to our company's user family" Voorhees adds, "These two institutions are true leaders in Puerto Rico for giving their students the most advanced tool available to prepare students for real-world chemistry."

Inter American and UPR-Ponce join the city's Pontifical Catholic University, the Caribbean's first user of MeasureNet. Its department recently authored MeasureNet's first General Chemistry Laboratory Manual in Spanish and has been active in promoting the benefits of MeasureNet across the island. Pontifical Catholic University's Professor Myriam Quintana and Carmen Collazo presented research at the 2004 San Diego American Chemical Society National Conference documenting the positive impact of their MeasureNet Networks on the program's curriculum and student learning experience.

MeasureNet Technology Ltd. manufactures patented, network-based data acquisition interfaces for science teaching laboratories. The community college recently completed an impressive Science Complex that boasts state of the art laboratories, as well as a new planetarium and 20-inch telescope. The 2-year college campus is nestled in high ground just to the east of the San Francisco State Fish and Game Refuge, with its new chemistry labs having impressive views of the Bay below.

Under the lead of instructor Michael Clay, the Chemistry Department put MeasureNet to work within two weeks of its arrival. Using experiments adapted and devised during Clay's recent sabbatical at Arizona State University, the department is currently on track to employ its two Networks in 31 experiments during the two-semester General Chemistry sequence. This marks an unprecedented level of utilization in the MeasureNet user community.

Aside from normal probeware (temperature, pressure, pH, drop counters voltage, and multi-function colorimeters), numerous experiments utilize MeasureNet's manual entry feature to organize non-MeasureNet data into spreadsheet format. Students conveniently access an entire lab's data via the department's LAN, while instructors then have student data sets from each period 'swept' into a single spreadsheet for easier viewing and analysis.

"Because of its network design," according to Clay, "MeasureNet is ideally suited for use as a 'data center,' enabling the direct entry of student data acquired from attached probeware, as well as convenient manual entry. Students then have their own and others data aggregated conveniently for analysis using spreadsheets. No other interface enables this so seamlessly as MeasureNet."

Clay's individual experiments will be available to MeasureNet users in early 2007. It is the first MeasureNet institutional user in the Canadian province. Known as "Cap College," the institution opened its first permanent campus in the Lynmour area of North Vancouver in 1973. Its scenic 34-acre campus is home to some 7,200 students. The area of North Vancouver is in a temperate rainforest zone sandwiched between the waters of Burrad Inlet and the majestic North Shore Mountains that reach above 1,400 meters within earshot of the Pacific.

Unlike other institutions of higher learning in British Columbia, Capilano College assigns programs into broad programmatic titles instead of traditional faculties. These include Liberal Arts, Science and Technology, Business and Professional Studies, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation, Health and Education, and Fine and Applied Arts. Capilano is also a leading institution in British Columbia for preparatory education that assists non-traditional students in enhancing employment and language skills. The school has one of the most successful university transfer programs in all of Canada.

"We're very happy about Capilano's choice." stated MeasureNet President Robert Voorhees. "Canada plays an important part in our strategy for international growth and customers there can be assured that they'll receive the same high-quality receive service we deliver to MeasureNet's U.S. institutions." Voorhees added that the weakening of the U.S. dollar by more that 20% versus many currencies in the past year has made MeasureNet even more attractive to export customers. "Combining MeasureNet's low operational costs with the currency-related discount is an unprecedented windfall for chemistry departments abroad."

MeasureNet Technology Ltd. manufactures patented, network-based data acquisition interfaces for science teaching laboratories. San Antonio College of Walnut, California has adopted MeasureNet for three major teaching laboratories in its new state-of-the-art laboratory facility. Located in suburban Los Angeles, the school is one of the largest community colleges in California with a combined 2004-5 enrollment of over 38,000 students. Founded in 1946, Mt. SAC's culturally-diverse campus offers over 200 degree and certificate programs on an expansive 400-acre campus

The advanced program was a first adopter of integrated laboratory data acquisition technology. Mt. SAC was one of the initial users of the LabWorks® interface in the late 1980s and in recent times has used calculator-based (CBL) interfaces. The department's Eileen DiMauro commented that main reasons for adopting MeasureNet included "versatility, ease of use, high precision and accuracy, probeware selection, and the ability to perform data acquisitions without PCs at each student workstation."

"Everyone at MeasureNet is pleased to have Mt. SAC on board" commented MeasureNet President Robert Voorhees. "Their program is well known for its energy, enthusiasm, and achievement both in Southern California and beyond. Many Mt. SAC faculty members are experienced veterans with electronic data acquisition. Their selection of MeasureNet is a testament to the package of advantages we bring to the lab versus PC and calculator-based systems."

Four networks with some forty-eight MeasureNet stations will be deployed in laboratories performing experiments that include pH titrations, kinetics colorimetry, and freezing point depressions.

MeasureNet Technology Ltd. manufactures patented, network-based data acquisition interfaces for science teaching laboratories. KFUPM will have the first MeasureNet System in the Middle East. The installation will include capabilities for shared UV-vis spectroscopy and at-station kinetics experiments.

The renown university possesses one of the most advanced training regimens in the region to meet the science, technical, and management challenges posed by Saudi Arabia's vast petroleum and mineral resources. KFUPM was created by royal degree in 1963 and originally enrolled 67 students. In 2003-04, the all-male student population reached over 10,000 individuals.

Located in Dhahran, the campus is a neighbor to key institutions including the Saudi Ministry of Petroleum and the headquarters of Saudi Aramco (which alone employs 56,000 workers in petroleum exploration, extraction, processing, distribution, and administration). The KFUPM campus has a desert climate similiar to Palm Springs, California.

"We are delighted that KFUPM's chemistry program has become a member of the MeasureNet community" said MeasureNet President Robert Voorhees. "As the preeminent science and technology institution on the Arabian Peninsula, the university's laboratories help prepare highly-skilled graduates for technical and leadership positions in the region's booming economy. I hope MeasureNet will play a key role in making the student laboratory experience even more relevant."

MeasureNet Technology Ltd. manufactures patented, network-based data acquisition interfaces for science teaching laboratories.
