Pedagogical Overview:  Before and After Electronic Data Acquisition With MeasureNet

Kinetics

Limited to the use of an old-fashioned clock reaction. Students frequently found this indirect approach to rate measurement confusing.

In 2005, our labs at the University of Cincinnati are adding new dual-beam colorimeters to perform kinetics experiments. We will begin with the venerable standard of crystal violet reacting with hydroxide ion.

Preliminary test show excellent kinetics results and it is anticipated that the direct nature of the observations will allow students to much more easily grasp the principles of the experiment.
