It was necessary to go to considerable lengths to get reasonably accurate measurements of cell potential. This was due to the use of simple voltmeters, which require significant current flow in order to register a potential. This necessitated the use of a porous thimble arrangement to effectively reduce the internal resistance of the cells.

The experiment became simpler to set up and carry out because of the high-quality, high-input-impedance measurements of potential possible with MeasureNet.

Setting up a voltaic cell is now as simple as putting two small beakers side by side connected by a strip of filter paper wetted with a salt solution as a salt bridge. The content of the experiment is essentially the same, but MeasureNet has made the manipulations needed for high-quality results significantly easier.
